We are Such a Joyless society TOI 3/8/01
We sacrifice aspects of our family life. We make sure we are always on call..................’Necessity allows no ifs and buts.
Because we cannot protect the space where ordinary joy might thrive if we gave it a chance, We compensate by buying distraction. We buy “Enjoyment”- a tepid version of spontaneous joy, especially when it is supplied by the mass entertainment industry. We indulge in consumer therapy. Then, of course, we need more money to pay for it all.
And now we are extending that empire into the lives of our children. We impose on them our own frenetic regime. School is not for enjoying; it is for remorseless testing. A permanent preparation for exams rather than a preparation for life with plenty of space for joy. How else will they be compete, we ask? And then we wonder why teachers complain there is no “joy” left in teaching.
Occasionally we need to defy the empire of necessity- if only to prove that we can. It might even help put a smile back on our faces.
हम वास्तव में एक आनन्द से रहित समाज हैं
हमने अपने पारिवारिक जीवन को दांव पर लगा दिया है। हमने यह सुनिश्चित कर लिया है कि हम हमेशा अपने व्यवसाय के लिए उपलब्ध रहें ‘क्योंकि जरूरत किन्तु – परन्तु नहीं देखती।‘
क्योंकि हमने अपने जीवन में इतनी सी भी जगह नहीं छोड़ी है जहॉं सहज आनन्द आसानी से घुस सके, यदि हम उसे थोड़ी सी भी जगह दें। और फिर हम इस सहज आनन्द के अभाव की क्षतिपूर्ति खरीद के माध्यम से करने की कोशिश करते हैं। हम आनन्द खरीदते हैं। उन्मुक्त सहज आनन्द का एक बनावटी संस्करण, विशेषकर तब जब यह संगठित मनोरंजन बाजार से खरीदा जा रहा हो। हम उपभोक्ता उपचारों में शामिल हो जाते हैं। तब, बेशक हमें इस खरीद के लिए और-और पैसे की जरूरत होती है।
और अब हम इस कुचक्र के साम्राज्य के विस्तार को अपने बच्चों की जिंदगी में भी फैला रहे हैं। हम उन पर इस आक्रामक तंत्र को थोप रहे हैं। ‘’स्कूल मजे के लिए नहीं हैं’’, हॉं, ये हैं संवेदनारहित परीक्षाओं के लिए। आनन्द के साथ जिन्दगी के लिए तैयारी के बजाय परीक्षाओं की अनन्त तैयारी। इसके बिना वे मुकाबला कैसे करेंगे, हम पूछते हैं? और फिर हम ताज्जुब करते हैं कि शिक्षक पढ़ाने में आनन्द नहीं बचे होने की शिकायत क्यों करते हैं।
कभी-कभी हमें अपनी आवश्यकताओं के साम्राज्य को चुनौती देनी चाहिए – केवल यह साबित करने के लिए ही कि हम ऐसा कर सकते हैं। शायद यह हमारे चेहरों पर मुस्कान वापिस लाने में भी मदद कर सके।
